Most electric devices operate with direct current (DC). Including devices that are relevant for sustainable energy services, such as solar panels, batteries and LED lights. The electricity grid operates with alternating current (AC), requiring transformation when connected with DC devices. Every transformation has its energy losses and requires resources. In the case of a complete DC-grid, many of these losses and resources are made redundant.
About DC Connected Homes
The project of DC Connected Homes is a collaboration between Capturam and Alliander (grid operators). In this project, the operation of a DC-grid in a residential context is put into practice. The student homes form a realistic grid situation, in which much can be learnt about technical aspects, security, legislation and benefits of a DC-grid. Furthermore, the experiences of the residents are valuable in the evaluation process.
