The Green Village: accelerating innovation for a sustainable future
Solving the world’s largest challenges requires radically new connections. Combinations of technologies that were never linked before, or innovation partnerships between unlikely partners. These connections lead to radical innovations, for example to cars powering homes, people producing their own drinking water, and buildings becoming computers.
While the ideas may be inspiring, the development and implementation of these innovations are extremely complex. Questions arise on various topics, and they are closely connected: technology (how to make it work?), business models (how to make it economically attractive?), public interest (what are society’s opportunities and concerns?), and regulation (if society wants this, how can we allow it?).
Bringing together everyone who needs to be involved – including you
The Green Village’s goal is to accelerate the development and implementation of these radical innovations. We do this by bringing together everyone who needs to be involved – scientists and engineers, businesses, the public, and government – at an inspiring place where innovations can be developed, tested and demonstrated by these partners. In an experimental real-life setting, a true living lab at Delft University of Technology that is open to anyone, including you.
A unique platform to help innovations get to large-scale application
The Green Village’s site takes a unique position in the chain from fundamental research and development to large-scale application of innovations in society. Many innovations never leave the lab of a corporate or university and find a first application at a pilot location. There may be technological risks, the return on investment may be uncertain, concerns on safety or privacy may exist, or the application simply does not meet current regulation.
The Green Village provides an environment where universities and businesses can develop, test and demonstrate their innovations without these concerns, with close involvement of the public and government. At The Green Village products are allowed to fail, the business model does not need to be clear, visitors may feel inspired yet uncomfortable (objective safety will always be assured!) and in some cases innovations will benefit from government “switching off” some regulations.
The Green Village is an initiative of Delft University of Technology and Stichting Green Village. The platform is supported by the European Regional Development Fund, the Province of South-Holland, the municipality of Delft, Alliander, Gasterra, and many others.
